To be completely honest – I was thinking about not posting this review. Breakfast was the one meal of the day which had not been pre-planned, and we left things loose with the intention of eating whatever looked good, came to mind or took our fancy.
We decided to walk down George Street and check out The Rocks. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we found a table free at The Rocks Cafe.
We started with coffee (a short macchiato for J, and a soy flat white for me). Not bad. A little bitter, and certainly not a game changer. But I needed caffeine, and this did the trick. TFP ordered an orange juice, which was definitely bottled. The UHT find it on the supermarket shelf kind of bottled.
The service was attentive and fast, so at least getting our orders in was easy.
J opted for his breakfast favourite, Eggs Benedict. He was disappointed to find the eggs were more overcooked than runny, and the muffins were stale (though toasted). The hollandaise was definitely pre-made caterer’s standard. Unfortunately this wasn’t what he had in mind.
My order was much more successful – poached eggs with toast. The eggs were fine, the toast sturdy and satisfying. I ordered vegemite to go with it to pep things up a bit
The fried tomato which comes with this dish was quite bland and watery, so I didn’t finish it.
A little more done than I usually like, but not a huge problem.
TFP’s big breakfast was pretty disappointing. The anaemic looking bacon was barely crisp, and didn’t appeal to me at all (even though she would have shared).
The eggs were the weird part – arriving overcooked (despite looking reasonable), pre-salted and a little rubbery. I’m not sure why people pre-salt their eggs, especially when sunny side up, as this makes them form an unpleasant plasticky film.
The mushrooms were fairly bland, and seemed quite wet – they could have done with a few extra minutes in the pan.
Sadly, not the greatest meal, despite the glorious surroundings, and the bill which should have indicated otherwise (which was over $70 for three people).

That’s sad. TFP said she wasn’t impressed, and looking that these pics I wouldn’t have been either. I think we’ve been pretty lucky in Sydney so far. I don’t think we’ve had one bad meal yet, excluding Subway (which has been consistently bad).
Wow – thats a lot for breakfast. Especiallywith non perfect eggs :/ I guess you’re paying for the view
